Google.cn Gets Axed, No More Censored Search Results
Google.cn is no more. An attempt to visit Google.cn will redirect you to Google's Chinese Hong Kong search engine, Google.com.hk. This move comes after alleged cyber attacks originating in China aimed at human rights activists.
It appears Google made good on it's promise to no longer censor search results for it's Chinese search engine. A quote from Google's official blog said this:
"...earlier today we stopped censoring our search services—Google Search, Google News, and Google Images—on Google.cn...
We want as many people in the world as possible to have access to our services, including users in mainland China, yet the Chinese government has been crystal clear throughout our discussions that self-censorship is a non-negotiable legal requirement. We believe this new approach of providing uncensored search in simplified Chinese from Google.com.hk is a sensible solution to the challenges we've faced—it's entirely legal and will meaningfully increase access to information for people in China."
So, Google sent China's government a message. No more censoring their human rights violations and what-not. However, Google was a big part of the lives of many Chinese. What will they do now, and will some other company just step into Google's old position for greater access to the ever-growing online market in China? We'll just have to wait and see I guess.
