How to download and install the Google Play Store

How to download and install the Google Play Store

Unbelievable as it may seem, there are occasions when it is necessary to install Google Play Store manually. Whether you have accidentally uninstalled it, or you want to revert to a previous version, or even if your Google Play Store is not working and you just want a fresh install, there's a solution! In this article, you will learn how to install the Google Play Store on your Android phone.

Jump to:

1. Check your current Google Play version

Updates take time and don't arrive at the same time for all Android devices. This is why sometimes you might want to download and install a newer version of the Google Play Store, especially if your current one is causing you trouble. Before rushing to download the latest Play Store APK, however, you should first check which version of the Play Store app you have installed at the moment. Here is how to do it:

  • Go to Settings, open Apps or App Management (this could vary from one device to another)
  • Find Google Play and tap it (you may have to tap on See all apps)
  • Tap on Advanced and scroll all the way down to the bottom where you can see the version number

If your Google Play app is working normally and the only reason you're sideloading is that you're impatient, you can also check the app version in the Play Store application itself. Open it, tap the three lines (menu button) in the top left corner, go into Settings and scroll all the way down to see the exact number.

Google Play Store version numbers explained

The numbering system for Google Play Store versions may seem a little confusing at first, but it's easy to get your head around. If the jumps between numbers seem odd, that's simply because Google didn't publicly release the versions in between.

2. Download a Google Play Store APK

Please note that the following guide to install Google Play store is for owners of an Android device with a licensed version of the app installed. We recognize that is sometimes necessary to re-install or roll back the Play Store app.

Download the latest version of the Google Play or a previous version of the Google Play Store? Try 'APK Mirror'.

As usual, most of the changes are under the hood, aimed at making everything run more smoothly. We haven't been able to find significant changes to the user interface or new features in the latest Google Play app version. If you download the update and notice any errors, however, check out our guide to troubleshooting the Google Play Store.

3. Install the Google Play Store

The simplest method to install the Play Store will already be quite familiar to you if you're an avid follower of this website: just download and install the Play Store APK manually. An APK is the Android equivalent to a .exe file (.dmg on Mac) on your computer.

Instead of downloading an app from the Google Play Store, you simply install it yourself without the Play Store's help. We've even got a handy guide to help you:

This is, of course, extra useful when the app you want to install is the Play Store itself. There are two ways to get the Google Play APK installed on your device: directly on your smartphone or through your computer. We'll do the easy way first.

Install Google Play Store with your smartphone

For older versions of Android (before Oreo) you will need to simply go to your settings menu and enable installing from unknown sources, then open the above link. You'll be prompted whether you allow the download and installation. APKMirror is a safe source, so it's ok to hit Yes.

On Android Oreo and above, such as Pie and Android 10, the process to install Google Play Store is a bit more complicated. Here is what you need to do:

  • Head to Settings and find Apps & notifications. Once in the apps menu, scroll down until you find your mobile browser - Google Chrome, for example.
  • Tap on your browser and scroll down to the Advanced section. There you will find Install unknown apps. Open and select Allow from this source. You can disable this option after you're done.

Remember, you can always search the Settings menu to find the option you are looking for / © NextPit
  • Using the browser on your device, go to the XDA Developers forum or APK Mirror website to download the APK for the latest version of the Play Store.
  • You may get a message warning that "this type of file can harm your device." Ignore it (trust us) and tap OK.
  • Open the APK (you can tap the completed download in your notifications menu), read the new permissions (if any) that the new Play Store version requests, then tap Install.

Install Google Play Store using a computer

If you don't have mobile data or a Wi-Fi connection on your device, you can download the Play Store app APK to your computer instead. The same process applies, but you will need a file manager app installed on your smartphone, if your device doesn't come with a preinstalled one.

  • Download a third-party file manager app, if you don't have one - FX File Explorer, for example. Allow it to install apps from unknown sources, following the same steps as described for your mobile browser.
  • Using the browser on your computer, go to XDA Developers forum or APK Mirror to download the APK for the latest version of the Play Store.
  • Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable and copy the APK over to your Android device.
  • Find the APK using your file manager app.
  • Launch the APK, accept the permissions and tap Install.
  • Don't forget to remove the permission to install from unknown sources from your file management app if you don't intend to sideload more APKs.

Once you've reinstalled the Google Play Store app, you shouldn't worry about having to download every following version manually again. As soon as there's a newer version than the one you sideloaded, the Google Play app will automatically update. If you are still experiencing problems, however, it's time to do some troubleshooting.

4. Google Play Store troubleshooting

Google Services Framework is a crucial service that lets the Play Store communicate with apps on your device, allowing for automatic updates and so on. If these functions stop working, or you experience other problems, then there may be a problem with the service. In such a case, you should clear the cache on both Google Play Store and Google Play Services. To do this:

  • Go to Settings > Apps & notifications
  • Scroll down to Google Play Store, tap it, then tap Storage & cache and then Clear cache.
  • Do the same for Google Play Services
  • That should fix most problems you'll experience with the Google Play Store

Note: depending on what type of device you have, it may need to be rooted in order to manually install the Google Play Store, but that's a tutorial for another day.

Don't be alarmed, unknown sources are simply locations outside of the Play Store, which is critical if it's the Play Store itself that you want.
    Should be: which ISNT critical

    • Alkohol May 13, 2019 Link to comment

No, that is precisely correct for the meaning intended. If it is the Play Store you want to install, then you do have to install from unknown sources because the Play Store app that would handle the installation (from the only known source -- the Play Store) is either not functioning or updating as quickly as desired. So you have to manually download the Play Store app and tell the device to install it under unknown source permission.

in android 7 i dont see clear cache and data anymore in the apps. where is that. also have a google pay-problem, update was blocked since i was working elsewhere (paypal?)with the problem. a clear instruction what must be set where-a tutorial should be offered by both paypal and google-play. google pay seems has nothing to do with that.

I'm confused! Now if I need to d/l the Play Store on my Ellipsis 7? tablet, which 'version' of d/l would I choose??? Computer? Phone? I don't have WiFi but do have data. A few days ago, I kept gettin' message that my messenger was out of date. Reluctantly, I decided to d/l a newer version. It wouldn't let me do it. A 'friend' told me that she had the same pblm and that she had to uninstall her current one. So, like an idiot, I uninstalled it.....only to STILL not b able to d/l the newer version. After a couple hrs of hair pulling, I decided to call tech support at Verizon. AGAIN, I proved my desire to own the idiot award! The guy walked me through it...still unable to d/l ANY version of messenger. Then he has me tap this, tap that, tap on Google play store and tap on uninstall! My brain kept saying"Don't u do it", but my stylus tapped it anyways! Then the guy asks me to tap on Google play store!!! And when I told him that it wasn't there anymore since he had me to uninstall it, he tells me to look n other places for it! OMG!!! So, as it stands, now I have no messenger, no Google play store and it seems I can't just d/l a messenger without the darn Play Store!!! HELP!!!

I don't want to do factory reset since almost all other things are now ok, after much much trying.
But re-reading the instructions i noted that it says "...clear the cache on Google Play Store and Google Play Services..." Trying that - I don't find Google Play Services from my applications. Should it be installing with the same apk or is that separate? - If so where can I find it?

  • perasma Aug 9, 2015 Link to comment

please add these 2 steps to this guide (if my answer is correct)...
    - after factory reset , unmount SD (might keep some cache there)
    - correct the date. (optional)

i think the mounted SD was the problem to my situation. God i was trying for a day to fix my spyphone.

Tried both methods and the clearing data and it does not work. My GT-I9502 seems to install google play ok, but half second after starting it just stops again. I have never had google play working in this phone because it is hardware originally for China Unicom, so there is some bloatware in it. I have now android 5.0.1, but had same problem with several earlier versions. I guess I need to dump Samsung and go with some other brand.

It says Insufficient space. And Google + app says the same thing.. Although I have an External SD Card. And have enough space ... I can update and download 10 apps around those two with no problem. Thats how I know Something is wrong with them... Please help I'm losing my mind trying to keep it updated

Clear your download cache. . Find download manager and then click clear cache and you should be good to go. If you can't find it try installing or updating an app and click on the download and the manager usually shows up. Hope that helps

that did absolutely nothing... They are still in the google app store, asking to be updated. I have plenty of space... I don't understand it. all other apps update with no problem, I just started having this problem when these two new updates came out.

Happy to help @Alexx! You can try clearing the cache for starters. Settings > Apps > go to Running tab and look for Google Play Store. If that doesn't work you can try the other steps in this article: www.androidpit.com/google-play-not-working

Have you made sure you have ''Unknown Sources'' enabled? Go to settings > About phone and tap on Build Number until the notification pops up. Then back up to settings again and you'll find Developer Options in your menu. Just check the box for Unknown Sources (and don't forget to uncheck it once you've installed the APK).

You just need to install ADB Tools on your PC and enable USB Debugging on your phone. You can see those instructions (for an unrelated issue) in this article: http://www.androidpit.com/how-to-record-screen-on-a-nexus-5

Just read the first paragraph under ''What you need'' - there's also a video about installing the Android SDK but you only need to download the ADB Tools which we have a link for in the article). Then you download the Gapps package/Play Store APK and enter ADB commands to push them to your phone. Here's a decent walkthrough from XDA (it's old though, so you'll need to get the current Gapps etc): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992242

      • Femi Jul 7, 2014 Link to comment

Hi Kris, Thanks again for the links. I got to download ADB, followed the second link on xda, but couldn't go beyond step 2.2 with the following commands:
        adb shell mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /system
adb push [the path to your SDK tools folder]\system system/
        adb reboot

First command fails, while for the second, i do not know what folder is being referred to. I tried reading through the entire post, but no guide or pointers as to what may be wrong.

      • Femi Jul 8, 2014 Link to comment

I think i may have messed up with the stock bootloader because every time the phone reboots, it boots up into the bootloader. So if the install doesn't complete before reboot, its lost as i have to manually then reboot the phone.
When i try to factory reset, its same thing. the reset process starts but when the phone reboots, it just goes into bootloader where i can only shutdown the phone or reboot. either options will not complete the process and return the phone back to the way it was before i did the initial reboot.
I am trying to find a way to fix this...

      • Kris Carlon Jul 9, 2014 Link to comment

You can always flash stock firmware again. That should fix the boot loop issue. Then you can factory reset again and clear the cache partition to avoid any other bugs occurring. Good luck!

  • Femi Jul 7, 2014 Link to comment

Hello Kris, thanks for the reply.

In my bid to get the E8 up and running, here's what i've done so far:
Tried unlocking bootloader and rooting following the details in link below:
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699065
I think the bootloader unlock was successful, but doubt the rooting was. Reason i doubt rooting was successful is because i got to install Titanium Backup and the app gave a warning saying root access was still unavailable.

I would like to start the whole process maybe on a clean slate, if possible, or simply just get root access for sure.

Kindly share with me details of how to flash GApps package through recovery, and yes, i have KK 4.4.2 on my device.

Would also love steps/guide to get to root please.

    • Kris Carlon Jul 7, 2014 Link to comment

Hi @Ferni, you can simply install an app from the Play Store called Root Checker to see if you got root successfully or not.

To get the Gapps package you want, just take a look on XDA. There's lots of different versions available, so jsut pick the one you want (ie. some only have the bare bones Google apps, others include Gmail, YouTube, Maps etc) and get the one for 4.4.2. Just download it to your device.

To flash it, just turn your phone off and press and hold Power and Volume Down to enter the Fastboot menu, then use the volume buttons to highlight Recovery Mode and press power to confirm. Then select install zip (or however it is worded) and find the Gapps package you downloaded. Hit power to confirm and that should be it.

Depending on how ''restricted'' the device is it may not work, but this is a good first try. Sometimes just installing the Play Store will automatically pull Play Services. If the APK won't install make sure you have Unknown Sources checked off in the security settings of your phone.

      • Femi Jul 7, 2014 Link to comment

Hi Kris, thanks for the feedback.
I did forget to mention that i got the phone from China, so it doesn't come with any of the Google Apps applications, so no play store, which is why i am trying to install Google Apps in the first place. All i have is an HTC Marketplace which is littered with Chinese only apps, and other apps are translated into Chinese, making it difficult to make sense of most of my search results there.

For the Recovery Mode procedure you stated, i am unable to get to the point where i will be asked to select the zip file i wish to install.

So i do have this dilemma now, what more to do? I have searched through xda and still reading up stuff, but my issue is the time spent to filter through so much info to apply to my particular situation.

      • Kris Carlon Jul 7, 2014 Link to comment

Ah, of course! You have stock recovery, my bad. When you select Recovery Mode you'll see the Android. Press volume up to get to the recovery menu. Because you don't have custom recovery you don't have the option to flash zips from SD card, so you'll have to do it via an ADB command. To avoid this post becoming a million miles long, you could search YouTube for the process as it is pretty straightforward but a little involved.

Hi Kris. I Just came across this post. I have the same phone and can't use any Google services. Is there a step by step of how to root and get the services work if I don't want the Chinese apps on? I can find a lotabout the m8 but not the e8 / m8sw

  • Femi Jul 6, 2014 Link to comment

    Hi Kris,

I have a bit of an odd problem. I recently got the HTC One E8 (also known as M8Sw dual sim), but it strangely didn't come with any of the native Google apps - Play Store, Gmail, etc.
I have downloaded and installed the APK for the Play Store, but the app never loads. So i went ahead to download the APK for Google Services, installed and now i keep getting this pop up message saying "Unfortunately, Google Play services has stopped".
The Gmail app i downloaded and installed also doesn't work.
The native OS is Chinese, the phone was purchased from China on my recent visit there.
What can i do to successfully load all the Google apps and possibly also remove all the Chinese stuff still encoded in the device OS?

    Femi

    • Kris Carlon Jul 7, 2014 Link to comment

Hi Ferni, as far as I'm aware the E8 is not yet planned for international release, so it's not a simple matter of flashing the international firmware (which would include Gapps). If an int'l version does appear you can simply take that route.

In the meantime you can try flashing the Gapps package through recovery. You just need to get the right Gapps for your Android version number (which I'm assuming is 4.4.2?) and flash it. If you have no idea what I'm talking about let me know and I'll explain in more detail ;)

If you want to remove the Chinese content pre-loaded you'll need to root the phone and delete it that way. I haven't heard of a root exploit for the E8 yet though, but you could try towelroot (as long as the build date of your kernel (in Settings > About Phone) isn't later than June 3rd).

    • Matt Fletcher Nov 21, 2014 Link to comment

I have the exact same problem. Did you manage to get Google services to work on the e8. If so can you let me kknow-how?

Hey! I got a problem with my tablet. It hasnt got google play store and I downloaded many times following your steps. But when I'm about to open it, it closes in an instand, showing me a message telling me " the application google play store has stopped unexpectedly. please try again".Can you help me solve this? Thank you in response.

    • Kris Carlon Jun 11, 2014 Link to comment

Hey @Giorgos, check to see if you have Download Manager enabled. Go to your Settings > Apps > ''All'' tab and look for Download Manager. Tap it and if it says Disable, tap that and then enable it again, or if it says Enable, tap that and exit. From here you should be able to install the Play Store and get going.
