Next week, Amazon will hold its annual sales day - Prime Day - promising millions of deals for its Prime subscribers. But despite happening simultaneously in all countries where NextPit is published, not every community member will take part in it.

A split community

The poll wasn't published in Brazil (my mistake, sorry!), so we will only show results for the three other domains - COM, DE and FR. The first question shows that half of the members will participate in Prime Day in the German and English language communities.

The French replied with 67% of votes against buying in Prime Day, which may be a result of not only the criticism against BigTech (GAFAM - Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft), but maybe also for the backlash after Amazon got the broadcast rights for the Ligue 1 (France's top tier football/soccer championship), as pointed out by Luna in the comments.

While the results were split in the German and English language sites, the French were clearly against Prime Day / © NextPit

Most popular times for buying electronics

With such a lukewarm reception for Prime Day - which I personally didn't expect - the following question was about which time of the year was the preferred one to buy electronic products. This time, local preferences were clearly seen, the main common thing being that Prime Day didn't have a significant margin in any of the communities.

While the English-language site had a clear preference for other sales (46%) and had Black Friday/Cyber Monday in second place, with 27% of the votes, the BF/CM combo was the winner in the German website, with over half the votes (52%). The fact that Black Friday isn't tied to one single online store may be a factor here, with the comments showing a more practical approach to shopping, specially in regard to avoid impulse buying.

The French poll had a slightly different set-up, but the answers went mainly to flash sales, not necessarily tied to a bigger sales event. Not even the "French days" - a nationwide event organized by French stores, held 2 weeks ago this year - received votes in the poll.

Not necessarily for electronics

The replies for the third question, about which kind of products our readers were interested in buying, showed a clear win for the "others" option, leaving smartphones in second place and all other kinds of electronics devices behind.

On the German site, "smartphones", "tablets", "audio products" and "hardware and accessories for smartphones and PCs" held a joint second place, with 14% of the votes. Meanwhile, the French showed interest in buying smart home gear, followed by TV and Photo/Video products.

The English-speaking community had a more varied result, maybe a reflection of the different countries NextPit is read, with the highlights being audio products and accessories for mobiles and PCs.

My apologies for not having the Brazilian community results, I was particularly interested in the replies from my country, not only because we tend to fall a lot for impulse buying (hopefully, not our community friends), but also because, since Amazon is still new in Brazil, there is less influence from important things like changes in customer support quality - which were mentioned by our German colleagues.

Anyway, thanks for the answers and comments in this weekend poll. Next Friday we will bring another set of community questions and I hope you join us again.

In 2021, Amazon Prime Day will once again take place in the middle of the year, following the postponement of the 2020 edition. With thousands of exclusive offers and promotions at the e-commerce giant, will you be part of this party? That's what we ask in this week's poll.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 edition was held in October — August, in the case of India — breaking the tradition of being organized in July. In 2021, Amazon Prime Day takes place on June 21 and 22, and the company promises more than 2 million deals around the globe.

This year, the event features an exclusive show on the Prime Video streaming service - included with Prime subscription - with a three-part special available starting June 17.

Will you be attending Prime Day?

With recent controversies in both Europe and North America over working conditions at the company — including a brief appearance by the company in the Oscar-winning Nomadland — many people may choose to boycott the North American giant, but does the NextPit Community think so?

Better to wait?

Because of the launch cycle, some types of products, such as TVs and some smartphones, may not be at their best price. Moreover, some products in high demand will probably be out of stock - like that PS5 already completing 6 months on many people's wish lists.

On the other hand, it may be the ideal time to buy some products from the 2020 lines (as long as it's not called PlayStation, GeForce or Radeon). But is it possible to resist the temporary offers and unit countdown for some promotions?
